In 2022, Pakistan held the chairmanship of the Group of 77 (G77) and China, the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries in the UN. Under Pakistan's leadership, the group successfully advocated for the establishment of the 'Loss and Damage' fund at COP27 to compensate vulnerable nations for the devastating impacts of climate change, such as the 2022 floods in Pakistan.

Ambassador Munir Akram is currently serving his second stint as Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, having been reappointed in 2019. He is a seasoned diplomat who has also served as the President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) twice. In 2024-2025, he has been a vocal advocate for debt relief for developing nations and a 'Loss and Damage' fund for climate-hit countries like Pakistan.

In March 2022, the UN General Assembly adopted a landmark resolution, introduced by Pakistan as the chair of the OIC, designating March 15 as the 'International Day to Combat Islamophobia.' The date marks the anniversary of the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings. This was a major diplomatic victory for Pakistan in its efforts to address religious intolerance and hate speech at the global level.

Pakistan has a long and distinguished history in UN Peacekeeping, having contributed over 200,000 troops to 46 missions in 28 countries since 1960. As of late 2025, Pakistan remains among the top troop and police-contributing countries. More than 170 Pakistani peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving under the UN flag, a contribution that is frequently lauded by the UN Secretary-General.

Resolution 47, adopted on April 21, 1948, is the most significant UN document regarding the Kashmir dispute. It mandated a three-step process: the withdrawal of Pakistani nationals, the reduction of Indian forces to a minimum level, and the holding of a UN-supervised plebiscite. Pakistan consistently cites this resolution as the primary legal framework for the resolution of the Kashmir issue per the will of the Kashmiri people.

Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan, who was also Pakistan's first Foreign Minister, achieved the historic distinction of serving as the President of the UN General Assembly in 1962. He was a world-renowned jurist and also served as a judge and the President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). His tenure at the UN was marked by his eloquent advocacy for the independence of colonized nations in Africa and Asia.

In June 2024, Pakistan was elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-2026 term, receiving a massive 182 votes in the General Assembly. This is Pakistan's eighth time serving on the Council, where it intends to focus on the peaceful resolution of regional disputes, international counter-terrorism cooperation, and the rights of people under foreign occupation.

Pakistan was admitted to the United Nations on September 30, 1947, just over a month after its independence. It was the only country whose membership was opposed at the time, specifically by Afghanistan over the issue of the Durand Line and 'Pashtunistan.' Pakistan has since become one of the most active members of the world body, particularly in peacekeeping and advocacy for the Global South.

Ahmed Shah Patras Bokhari, a famous writer and diplomat, served as the first Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations.

Following the first war between India and Pakistan, the UN mediated a ceasefire that came into effect on January 1, 1949.
